Undergraduate Athletic Training
Student Selection and Admission Standards
Application packets for the Athletic Training Professional
Program (ATPP) will be available November 15 of each year.
Students that wish to apply must obtain the application materials
from the athletic training program director and return the completed application
by January 15.
1. Pre-Program Requirements:
- Accepted to Western Michigan University and to the University's
HPER Department.
- Attainment of junior status (56 credits).
- The completion of an observation period in an environment
that provides athletic training services. A certified athletic trainer must
endorse verification of a total of 100 hours.
- Submission of application for admission to the Athletic Training
Professional Program by January 15th.
2. Application Procedures:
- Obtain application from the athletic training program director
after November 15th and the pre-program requirements have been obtained.
- Completed application must be returned to the athletic training
program director by January 15th. The application will be complete with the
following materials:
- Application Form. This form will be issued by the program
director after November 15th of each year.
- Two letters of recommendation (Letters can not be from
staff athletic trainers employed at WMU).
- Clinical Experience Verification Forms. These forms
will be issued in PEPR 153 Introduction to Athletic Training.
- Clinical Experience Evaluation Forms. This form will
be completed by a designated clinical instructor upon completion of the
100 required hours of clinic and sport observation. The student applying
for admission must obtain the original evaluation form.
- The selection committee will review your application. An
interview will be scheduled for the candidates that have a completed application
filed and meets the minimum pre-program requirements.
- Each student will be contacted of his or her status by February
28th of the application semester. A student may obtain a conditional admittance
until program requirements have been obtained.
- Candidates that have not been accepted to the ATPP can appeal
the decision by submitting a formal response to the Athletic Training Program
Director within thirty days of the notification.
3. Criteria for acceptance:
- Demonstrated knowledge and interest in the athletic training
profession.
- Experience in the health care field.
- Grade point average. A minimum overall grade point average
of 2.5.
- Space available in the athletic training professional program.
- Completion of Athletic Training Pre-program requirements
with a 2.5 overall grade point average, and a minimum "C" grade
in each of the required courses:
- BIOS 112 Principles of Biology
- BIOS 211 Human Anatomy
- BIOS 240 Human Physiology
- Phys 113/114 General Physics
- Psy 100 General Psychology
- PEPR 111 Healthy Living
- PEPR 181 First Aid
- PEPR 149 Computer Applications for HPER
- PEPR 153 Introduction to Athletic Training
- PEPR 253 Injury/Illness Survey & Management
- PEPR 240 Motor Development & Learning
Students that are accepted to the professional program will
be required to schedule an appointment with their academic advisor and register
for the required courses. Matriculation for those students accepted will begin
the fall semester of the following academic year and will continue for a minimum
of four semesters.
