Text: PreCalculus: Math 1180 by Dwyer and Gruenwald

Calculator: You are required to have a graphing calculator for this course. If you do not already own one, then you should purchase one; before you do, refer to the WMU Math Department webpage for a list of calculators that may be required in courses you may need to take later in your studies.

The Plan: We'll cover the whole book, more or less in order.

Grading: There will be

(a) Homework, quizzes and/or in-class work and/or small group projects

(b) Three midterm exams

(c) One final exam

Thus there are 5 components to the work you will do this semester: 4 exams, and recitation work. Each of these will determine one fifth of your grade. The final course letter grade will be determined according to the following curve:

89% and above: A

82% to 89%: BA

75% to 82%: B

68% to 75%: CB

60% to 68%: C

55% to 60%: DC

50% to 55%: D

You are encouraged to work together on the homework assignments. On the exams, needless to say, you may not confer with anyone.

Exam Schedule: The exam schedule is as follows:

Midterm Exam 1 Week of October 1

Midterm Exam 2 Week of October 29

Midterm Exam 3 Week of November 27

Final Exam: You can determine this by looking at the Registrar's calendar webpage.

The final exam will be cumulative, but will concentrate on the material covered in the last part of the course. Contact your instructor as soon as possible if you have a conflict with any of these exam times!

Your Responsibilities: You are responsible for making yourself aware of and understanding the policies and procedures in the Undergraduate (pp. 274-276) Catalog that pertain to Academic Honesty. These policies include cheating, fabrication, falsification and forgery, multiple submission, plagiarism, complicity and computer misuse. If there is reason to believe you have been involved in academic dishonesty, you will be referred to the Office of Student Conduct. You will be given the opportunity to review the charge(s). If you believe you are not responsible, you will have the opportunity for a hearing. You should consult with me if you are uncertain about an issue of academic honesty prior to the submission of an assignment or test.

Withdrawals: November 5, 2007 is the last day for a student to withdraw from a course without having a grade recorded on their transcript.

Incompletes: You probably won't get an incomplete. An incomplete may be given only when illness, necessary absence, or other reasons beyond the control of the student prevent completion of the course requirements by the end of the session. They are rarely given, and cannot be given as a substitute for a failing grade.

Make-Up/Late Work: There will be no make-up for missed quizzes. Your lowest quiz score will not be counted when your final grade is determined to accommodate this. If you cannot attend an exam due to extenuating circumstances come and talk to me, bringing proof of the circumstances which caused your absence. If you know that you will be absent during the week in which a test is to be given tell me as soon as you yourself are aware of it, and accommodations will be made.

Other Concerns: Please talk to me as soon as possible, or whenever something comes up, about any other concerns you have about the class. If you have a disability and may require disability-related accommodations, let me know as soon as possible; this includes invisible disabilities like chronic diseases, learning disabilities, and psychiatric disabilities. If you have athletic or other extracurricular commitments and hope to accommodate them, let me know as soon as possible.
