This is my philosophy of teaching.

People have different ways of learning. For example, I am a student who learns best visually, and kinesthetically. Because I know this about myself I have an easier time approaching learning. In my classroom I will have all my students go through a learning styles test so that I know how they learn best. This will help the student reach their highest potential and help me help them. I also think that that a lot of people do their best work and continue to do so with encouragement. I have heard of a book called The Five Love Languages. In it describes ways that we feel most loved and ways that we show people we love them. By incorporating the love languages into the classroom I can better encourage the students to do their personal best. If one student feels most appreciated and encouraged by gifts, I can have a treasure chest for them to choose something out of. If another student feels more appreciated and encouraged by service, I could let them lead the line or use the chalkboard (we all liked to do that as kids).

Other ways to increase learning is by making sure the students are interested and engaged. In the classroom I am currently pre-interning in, the classroom dynamic is very unusual compared to what I have known. But I like it. The students’ work is very individualized and catered to their likes. A girl in the class has been reading about weather and climate and books on science for her reading, whereas another student is already in beginner chapter books. This way the students are able to reach their personal best.

Coming from a biracial background, I have found that diversity in the classroom in important. Whether it is in the artwork that hangs on the walls, the books in the classroom or the lessons that are being taught. Diversity in the classroom is important because then all the students feel like they belong there. We as a class can also learn a lot about and from each other. I would love to have families come in and talk to us about their culture and let us celebrate with them their heritage.

Some of my teaching goals are to create an atmosphere in which students feel they are part of a community, a place where they belong. By incorporating all these ideologies the classroom will be a place of maximum potential. I want my students to take responsibility for their actions and their work, along with their words. It will be a loving community with intense learning. I hope they will end the day with a sense of accomplishment and self worth. And of course, knowing they had a great time learning today!

There are some areas I would like to improve as a teacher so far. Those areas include teaching reading instruction and having confidence as a teacher. I want to be that cool teacher, but not the push over. In time and more classroom experience I hope that I can sharpen those skills.
