Marking the mouth of the St. Joseph River that winds its way through the states of Indiana and Michigan into Lake Michigan, the St. Joseph Light Station is the fifth in a series of lighthouses at this location built to support lake and river commerce.

The pair of lights function as a "range light" system. Sailors on the lake align the lights by sight, marking a direct entrance into the harbor of St. Joseph.
