Surfing: Parenting
Your Child Online
http://www.kidsdomain.com/features/safesurf/surf.html
I would use this in my classroom prior to going to the media center to use the internet. I would send a letter home to parents with this website included because it would be a helpful tool for parents to use. It gives guidelines to parents about which family rules should be set before their child begins surfing the internet. It also focuses on risks to using the internet. These risks include harassment, exposure to inappropriate materials, drug and alcohol dangers, objectionable messages, and legal and financial risks, password security, privacy, and gambling. It is important that children know how to surf the web safely and this gets parents involved in the process.
Computers: Inside
and Out
Computer Care and
Safety
http://www.kidsdomain.com/brain/computer/lesson/comp_les10.html
I would use this in my classroom as a lesson before my students start using the computers in the classroom or at the media center. It is important for students to know and understand how to care for the computer that they will be using. This website includes tips on how to keep computer systems free of dust, dirt and liquids, shocking possibilities, such as never using your computer doing a storm, and adding new installations to your computer. In order for computers to work correctly, they need to be taken care of inside and out. This is a great website for setting these computer care guidelines.
Computer Toolbox
Flash Typing
http://www.kidsdomain.com/down/pc/flashtyping.html
This is a great website to help students learn how recognize where the keys are located at on the keyboard and how to learn touch typing by incorporating 3 senses - sight, touch, and sound - in the learning process. It explains the color correlation of which fingers to use for which keys. The object of the game is to strike the letter key that is flashed before it hits the windshield of the letter blast and cracks the windshield. It is a fun way for students to learn how to type on a keyboard and would be a very useful teaching tool for this.
