In fall 2000, I made the best choice in my life: the decision to become a teacher. In the spring of 2004, I completed my third year teaching English at Bishop O’Dowd College Preparatory High School in Oakland, California. I also obtained my California Single Subject CLAD Professional CLEAR credential in English, a certification that may be applied to teach in any number of states.
As I have continued along my path as a teacher, I realized that I needed more education to better serve my students. I relocated to Kalamazoo, Michigan in order to obtain my Master's in English Education from Western Michigan University. I am currently an instructor at Western and completing units to fulfill my MA degree.
Friends have often taken on the role of family for me, and I am grateful for the wonderful relationahips I have found both in Michigan and California. Animals are also important to me; my cats Lynus and Little Bear definitely play leading roles in the tragicomedy of my life.
My personal interests are centered on traveling, teenagers and learning new things. I have visited Europe, Australia and South America and I hope to work as a teacher in China some summer soon. Many of my travels within the United States have included the teenagers I work with through the Presbyterian churches I have attended. Building houses, serving in soup kitchens and refurbishing aging community churches with packs of kids has taught me to value the hearts and souls of the teens I work with, not just their minds.
