An Internet Service Provider (ISP) is a company like AT&T, or MCI, who consumers can go to, pay a fee, and gain access to the world wide web.

A backbone provider is responsible for providing internet service to large, international networks. The NSFnet, for example, provides internet access to hundreds of Universities across the nation.
