Also, the concept of subtraction was introduced. Students should be able to identify a nickel and a penny and add any given amount of nickels and pennies up to $1.00. In reading, students practiced identifying titles, subtitles, and labels to help us understand stories. For some of the early readers, we practiced getting our lips ready to stretch out the words. Many of the groups started new books. Please ask your child about the books that they are reading in class. In science, we completed  Our Earth unit. We started our next unit,  Measuring and Sorting. please find the  Our Earth packet in your child s Friday folder. Some key vocabulary words you may want to talk to your child about are: igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic, precipitation, evaporation, and condensation. In social studies, we continued to work on mapping skills. The students learned about a compass, directions, a key, and worked on creating their own maps. Finding A Safer Internet .For Children Dear Parents, I urge you to take the time and read the following article; I am trying to inform you of the issues that your children may come across while using the internet. As first grade students, your children will not be doing a large sum of work on the internet; however, they will start to be doing more as they move up in school. With the more time and experience on the internet the more aware you and your child need to be about web safety and internet filters. Given the convenience of the World Wide Web (WWW), you would hate to think about all of the potential downfalls of it; sadly they need to be a main priority to keep your children safe and away from information, pictures, and even predators that you would not want them to see or be around. It is extremely easy to accidentally access a site with the above mentioned materials. Most schools have found that the best way to prevent access to sites with inappropriate materials is to install firewall and/or filtering software on individual computers or on the school or district network that connects them to the internet (Roblyer, 2002). Internet filtering software gives you the ability to control content displayed, block websites and set up passwords; it prevents your child from viewing Web pages listed on a particular database (one that you can create) (Levine, 2001). There are many different types of firewalls and/or filtering software s available, and I would urge you to do a little research of your own to find the right one to fit in your home. I am not trying to scare anyone away from letting their child use the internet because it can be a very beneficial tool, however, I urge you to get educated on the situation. By taking responsibility for you children s online computer use, parents can greatly minimize any potential risks of being online (Magid, 2003). Having the computer in a family friendly room eliminates any hidden information, and makes using the internet and computer a family safe thing. Wednesday Today Toni helped several kids put together their  ot wheel. Thursday A group of boys had a problem during centers and they were able to solve it alone.
