The Planet Saturn

The Romans gave the name Saturn to the Greek Titan Kronos. In fact, all the planets of our solar system, and most of their moons, have been given the names of mythological gods and goddesses, in their Latin form.

Rhea

Rhea is one of the moons of Saturn. Once you have read the Theogony, can you appreciate why it is so named? Who was Rhea and why is it natural to associate her with Saturn?

For some spectacular satellite photos of Saturn and its moons, taken by the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft, browse the Photo Gallery of the National Space Science Data Center. For images of all the planets in our solar system, go to the index page of the NSSDC. From these pages there are links to the full range of data and histories of the various planetary missions.
