Early Baseball in Detroit
  • Michigan’s first major league entry: The Detroit Wolverines
  • The Wolverines played in the National League from 1881 through 1888
  • In 1887, they won the National League pennant. Despite the victory, the team did not have a large enough fan base and Major League Baseball was temporarily put on hiatus for Detroit.

  • Detroit Tigers founded in 1894
  • Originally played at Bennett Park, before moving to Tiger Stadium in 1938
  • One of the American League's eight charter franchises, and one of only four clubs still located in it’s founding city
  • Won there last World Series Championship in 1984
