Rhode Island became a state on May 29, 1790. The capital city is Providence. The state was named Rhode Island possibly to honor the Greek Island of Rhodes or was named Roode Eylandt by Adriaen Block, a Dutch explorer, because of its red clay. Rhode Island is 1,214 square miles large. The economy is based on nursery stock, vegetables, dairy products, and eggs for agriculture and fashion jewelry, fabricated metal products, electric equipment, machinery, shipbuilding and boatbuilding, and tourism for industry. It's nickname is The Ocean State. It is America's smallest state. The state motto is Hope.
