Poetry Unit Lesson Plans
The Objectives:
The students will be introduced to a variety of different poetry genres through the reading and writing of those genres.
The students will be introduced to poetry terms and techniques that will be useful to know for either the English AP test or the MEAP.
The students will use the poetry provided to them to shape their opinion of what the American Dream is to different people and to themselves.
The students will use the poetry that they learn to write to express their ideas about the world around them.
The Activities:
Rreading various poetry selections provided on this website. Go to Poetry Readings for possible selections.
Responding to and reflecting upon those readings.
Discussion about the readings
Writing various styles of poetry. See Poetry Writings for required poem forms.
Analyzing various poems through writing, drawing and acting.
The Assessment:
The reflections/responses to the poems will be counted as journal entries for credit.
The poetry written by students will be graded as credit in terms of the poem type.
The final assessment will be the poetry porfolio that will be collected at the end of the unit. See Portfolio Rubric for point values.
