Mid-Term Grades (3-9-2014 Su)

Note from Dr. Phil:

Here we have the breakdown of your current Grade by category. The grades for Exam 1 and Exam 2 is your curved exams -- UNLESS you still have to makeup Exam 2, in which case Exam 2 is the same as Exam 1. Exam 3 is estimated as the average of Exams 1-2. The Final Exam is twice the average of Exams 1-3. Quiz scores are added up, and scaled as if all quizzes were taken. Everyone is given an estimated "B" on their Topic 1 paper and an "AB" on their Topic 2 worksheets -- most people do better than that when the papers are graded. Please note that there may be some late quizzes which will be graded later, which may result in an unusually low quiz grade.

PLEASE NOTE:

(1) These are estimated grades for your benefit -- they are not part of your transcript. The letter grade will also be available on the Mid-Term Grades via GoWMU. You can compare your results with your First Work grades here.

(2) If you are "flunking" -- with a CD, D or F grade -- that does not mean you are actually failing the course. It just means you need to pull up your grades. There is still time left to get a C or better in PHYS-1070. We obviously have not yet had all the exams, so the Bad Test Day adjustment is not yet in effect. And there may be a course curve to raise grades. You can also always stop by Dr. Phil and we can play with the spreadsheet to show you how to improve your grade.

(3) 6 of the 7 quizzes given have been entered, we cannot drop the 3 lowest quizzes yet. If you have any low or zero quizzes, your quiz grade is likely to suffer catastrophic failure. Come to my office and we can talk about a better representation of your estimated course grade.

(4) Most people kept the same grade as their First Look grade. About an equal number shifyed up as down, mostly by just a half grade.

And in case you were wondering, I am an optimist, so I call the grade between an "A" and a "B" as an "AB". The university calls it a "BA". They are the same thing. I just like to call it "better than a B" rather than "worse than an A".

If you don't remember your PID, or aren't sure, send me an email, preferably from your wmich.edu e-mail account, and I can send you your Estimated Grade breakdown information. Or stop by during any of my Office Hours.
