What do I need to use WebCT Vista?

WebCT Vista requires a broadband connection

Most computer labs on campus and in the regional centers can use WebCT Vista. If you are having problems using WebCT Vista in a computer lab, please fill out a problem report form. A link to this form can be found at the WMU E-learning support site at http://www.wmich.edu/elearning

If you are off campus, the best results occur with cable or DSL connections. Some people have reported success using dialup, however most report that the system is very slow. Others report they are unable to login.

Browser Checks

WebCT Vista performs a browser check when you login. If you donÕt have the supported browser or Java installed, you may not be able to perform some class activities.

If you need help setting up your computer, please contact the OIT Help Desk (387-HELP). They are ready and able to help.

b.      Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_06 or higher

If you have more than one version of Java installed, it is recommended that you remove (uninstall) the old version(s).

Sometimes your Java software may become corrupted. If you suddenly cannot perform a task that you could accomplish previously (like attaching a file for an assignment), re-install your Java. You can download a supported version from the WMU E-learning support site.

Some instructors may ask students to visit Web sites that use Java applications in order to complete an assignment. In these cases the version of Java on your computer needs to be compatible with both WebCT Vista and the Java application at the other web site.

3.      Enable popup windows for vista.wmich.edu, otherwise you will not be able to use WebCT Vista mail, threaded discussions, or take quizzes. Also make sure any other popup blockers installed on your computer are turned off.
