This year's banquet honored the classes of 1946, 1971, and 1996. The class roll call was conducted by Chuck Miknis, Class of 1971, with 121 alumni responding, beginning with the Class of 1933. There were eight teachers present.

The business meeting was called to order and Paula Jones Lyons read the minutes and treasurer's report. Minutes and report were accepted as read. There was no old business. For new business, Nancy Kroes, Class of 1970, suggested a fund raiser in order to increase funds and purchase 50-year pins. She suggested a DKHS Alumni Banquet Cookbook featuring recipes used for the banquet. Nancy had made a number of request forms which were available to anyone who was interested. We took a vote on the cookbooks, majority ruled and the motion was seconded by George "Bud" Leonard, Class of 1943. Leatrice Jones, Class of 1940, suggested that the potluck should have four table lanes in order to move along faster. The motion was seconded. Paula Jones Lyons then presented the nominations for next year's officers. They are:

  • President: Kathy Hayward Curtis, Class of 1972
  • Vice President: Lynn VanderVeen Campbell, Class of 1973
  • Secretary: unknown at this time

No further nominations were made and these candidates were accepted as the 1997 officers.

Chuck Miknis, Class of 1971, spoke of how times have changed. Music then: Jackson 5, Three Dog NIght, James Taylor, and who can forget The Carpenters. The music now: Smashing Pumpkins!?; Fashion: long hair, pork chop sideburns and Rod's rattlesnake pants. Aside from the pork chop sideburns and Rod's rattlesnake pants, the fashions are the same! He spoke of TV shows, sports, and the Vietnam War. Rick Hyde, Class of 1971, also spoke of the class whose motto was "If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right". He remembered that we were not a "fancy" class, but a class with a mixture of cliques who all got along. We were the first class to play on the new baseball field and finished second in the KVA. He looked fondly back on the Class of 1971, individually made up of ordinary kids, but put together, saw that it was worth doing and did it right.

Flutel Nye and Jerry Johnson, Class of 1946, spoke of memories of Mr. Donovan and also of what had happened to Ken Kahler during study hall. They read from a paper of fellow class members who spoke of Ozzie making a good president one day if they didn't hang him first. Flutel told us about the high fly ball that hit him on the head only to have Ozzie catch it! We heard about the class trip and how the bowling score was added up wrong, and also about the girls' basketball team. A reminder was made to anyone in their class that was still interested in purchasing a 50-year memory book for a fee of $10 each.

Paula Jones Lyons presented the 50-year pins to the Class of 1946. The meeting was adjourned and the alumni were then entertained by the dulcimer group Memory Lane. All in all it was a very pleasant evening and the music was the icing on the cake to an enjoyable event.

Respectfully submitted,
Paula Jones Lyons, Class of 1971

The "Stuck Twins", Laura Stuck Raher and Lauren Stuck Baldwin, reminised about the class of 1970 and graduation night which was culminated by a climb to the top of the water tower which used to stand in the corner of the golf course at M-43 and G Avenue in Kalamazoo, to paint "DKHS class of 1970" on it, which was the tradition of the time for Comstock, Delton, Gull Lake, and Parchment. They did a wonderful job—it took about two years before one of the other schools painted out our 1970. Dick Hart from the class of 1945 shared a story I'm not sure he was supposed to, about Betty Gould Belson. He also read the class of 1945's prophesy which caused a lot of laughs.

Nancy Kroes presented 50-year pins to the class of 1945. The meeting was adjourned and the alumni were invited back into the dining commons to be entertained by, and dance to, the Otsego Jazz Ensemble (with Jeff Bourdo, class of 1971, on the drums). Those of us who stayed were further entertained by members of the class of 1945 who danced to the waltz and polka requested by Dick Hart. Too bad we didn't have a camcorder so you could all see!
