This
is why I needed to do this project. Too many cats on a too small bed left
no room for me! |
| I
started the project by gutting a room that had been added on to the house
in 1943. The room was in a shed-type addition and had a very low flat
ceiling. I wanted to gain enough height to add a ceiling fan so built
false rafters. This allowed me to gain one foot, just enough for a ceiling
fan. |

Another

shot of the gutted east wall,, after the window had been replaced, but
before the new "rafters". |

This
is a shot of the north wall, which faces Wall Lake. The game plan here
was eventually adding a 3-season porch along this side of the house with
a hot-tub. In preparation for this, I removed the window on this side
and added a single french door. |
| A
shot of the west wall. This wall is extra deep because the bathroom stack
pipe is in it. Previously it had some built-in shelves taking advantage
of the extra depth, but they didn't work into my plans so I just buried
the space. |

This
is the after shot of the east wall. I installed bead board panelling and
made all the trim out of pine, stained with a medium walnut Danish oil.
The bear head is real. I bought it at a garage sale when I was 16. The
bear was killed in 1953. It was a steal at $15. The side table was one
I made as a class project for the first woodworking class I took at Western
Michigan University. I had found the antique legs at an auction, and designed
and built a table to go with them. |

I used beadboard strips stained with medium walnut Danish oil. You can
see that the ceiling fan was added and functions quite well. That's Jordan
enjoying the new bed. |
| And,
even though they still had the old bed, the cats decided they liked this
one better and soon took it over as well. Sigh. It is tough being a cat
at my house... |

And this is what it looks like today--a lighter color on the wall, new valances and new blinds. |
