HPER 6600- Governance and Administration of Sport

Text Book:    Parkhouse (2004) The Management of Sport (4th ed). McGraw-Hill.

Course Description:

This course serves as an introduction to the management, governance, and leadership of interscholastic, intercollegiate, corporate, and amateur sport. Focus will be directed towards general management and leadership principles, as well as specific competency areas required by all sport managers. This course serves as the introductory course by providing a conceptual foundation for future courses in financial management, personnel management, risk management, and facility and event management and promotion

Course Design:

This course is designed to help you develop the skills necessary to succeed in the Sports Management field in the 21st century. This course will require both class time and online instructional methods. There will be many assignments and activities that are designed to help you develop problem solving, critical inquiry and research skills. This course is designed to utilize both written and verbal skills to demonstrate knowledge gained.

Course Objectives:

11.   Discuss effective options for problem solving and decision-making

Course Policies:

  1. All papers must be typed, and will follow APA Guidelines. 
  2. All papers in hardcopy will be STAPLED
  3. I will often request electronic copies of papers, you should attach them to an e-mail in Microsoft Word.
  4. Please proofread, edit and hand assignments in on time, you will be graded on writing.
  5. You are welcome to eat or drink, but you MUST clean up after yourself and respect those around you. If you must leave for any reason try to be as discreet as possible.
  6. Please turn cell phones to vibrate and refrain from texting during class.
  7. Any personal issues that arise that may interfere with class performance, turning in assignments, or taking tests must be discussed prior to the exam or due date. Any instance presented after the fact will not be accepted.

HPER 6600-Fall 2010--Assignments

At the beginning of class you will randomly select a Sport NGB. First Day of Class
NGB Paper #1 Paper will explain the history of the NGB, its purpose, etc.
NGB Paper #2 Paper will discuss membership, how an athlete becomes a member, what the NGB does for its athletes.
NGB Paper #3 Final paper will discuss the future of the NGB. Potential threats, etc.

Final Group Project

Class will be broken into groups and a brainstorming session for relevant issues followed by this assigment:

Each group has chosen a topic.  The goal is to write a paper concerning the topic and make a presentation concerning the topic to class.  To that end, this is what you are assigned:

 

Your paper:

 

1.            Will clearly define the topic.

 

2.            Will be well written.

 

3.            Will explain not only the topic, but how the topic affects sport governance

 

4.            This is a research paper, NOT an opinion paper.  Your group paper should have research and sources.  Those sources should be journalistic or scholarly.

 

5.            You will be given class time to work on the paper, do not squander the time which means that you should be ready to contribute.

 

6.            You will be graded as a group.

 

7.            You will turn in one paper that has been proofread, and well written.

There will be two (2) quizzes during class. Each will be comprehensive and will cover the lectures and the assigned reading chapters.
