Horn Day

horn day

Horn Day is an annual festival at Western open to anyone who is interested in learning more about the horn.   This fun-filled event includes an entire day of horn activities, including a guest artist master class and recital, a solo competition, a recital by the WMU Horn Choir and WMU student soloists, and a chance for all participants to play in the Mass Horn Choir, which rehearses during the day and performs in the final concert.

Past guest artists include:

  • William Barnewitz, Principal Horn, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra
  • Michelle Reed Baker, Second Horn, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and faculty member at The Manhattan School of Music
  • Jeff Agrell, Horn Professor at the University of Iowa
  • Douglas Hill, Horn Professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison
  • Karl Pituch, Principal Horn, Detroit Symphony Orchestra
  • Jesse McCormick, Second Horn, Cleveland Orchestra
  • Virtuoso Horn Duo (Kerry Turner and Kristina Mascher, Luxembourg Philharmonic and American Horn Quartet)

The next Horn Day is on Saturday, January 29, 2011 and features Bernhard Scully, professor of horn at the University of Illinois, Champagne-Urbana. A passionate teacher, he has been on the faculty of the Music Academy of the West, the Eastman School of Music, the Kendall Betts Horn Camp, the Madeline Island Music Camp with the Prairie Winds Quintet, and the Raphael Mendez Brass Institute. Bernhard has held the position of principal horn with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra where he was featured as a soloist on many occasions. Prior to the SPCO he was the horn player of the Canadian Brass, performing on numerous recordings and touring the world. He has been fortunate to return and play with the quintet on numerous occasions since his departure.

Mr. Scully is in demand as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral player (including orchestras such as the Chicago Symphony), and is a frequent guest artist at workshops, conventions, and clinics across the United States. He has recorded the “G. Schirmer Horn Library”, which includes much of the standard repertoire for horn and piano. He has numerous awards to his credit including being the first horn player to win the prestigious McKnight Music Fellowship. In 2010 the University of Wisconsin-Madison awarded him the Distinguished Alumni Award for excellence in artistry.
