Poetic—emphasizes texture, rhythm

Expository—“explains” with the purpose of offering logical argument

Observational—sense that the camera “watches” the subject; human beings—and their actions and interactions-- are the emphasis

Participatory—emphasizes the relationship between filmmaker and subject (*alternative term: “direct cinema”)

Reflexive—the process of making the film becomes the subject that is documented (“cinema verite”)

Performative—emphasizes the emotional and personal life of the filmmaker
