Documentary Modes (a la Nichols)

Poetic—emphasizes texture, rhythm

Expository—“explains” with the purpose of offering logical argument

Observational—sense that the camera “watches” the subject; human beings—and their actions and interactions-- are the emphasis

Participatory—emphasizes the relationship between filmmaker and subject  (*alternative term:  “direct cinema”)

Reflexive—the process of making the film becomes the subject that is documented (“cinema verite”)

Performative—emphasizes the emotional and personal life of the filmmaker

Primary:  Discussion

1.  mode of presentation

--“observational” style and technique?

--hand-held camera; long takes; selective focus; evidentiary editing?

2.  arguments and issues

--view(s) of candidates

--the process itself?

--objectivity?
