Solving Linear Equations
               For the next few weeks we will be studying linear equations. We will look at graphing and solving linear equations.Some of us will even get into solving linear systems. During the course of these few weeks, if you need extra support or more examples, please use the websites provided on this page. I have personally gone through each and every one to make sure they are user-friendly. The last site is a practice quiz. I highly suggest you take this quiz before your quiz next week.

Video

This site provides a listing of all the video lectures available to the learner to view.  The student would find the video lecture of solving linear equations (5), and the video will start playing.  This video is about 29 minutes.  This may be a little long, or very similar to sitting in class, however it does provide you with the opportunity to learn in a more comfortable and familiar location.  The video does a great job at providing the necessary information while in the comforts of your own home.

Tutorials

This site also serves as a tutorial on solving several types of math problems.  If you think that you need another example to be explained to you, simply click on the “Next Example” button at the bottom of the screen.  There is also a link for help in accessing information on using a graphing calculator to solve linear equations. 

This site serves as a tutorial on several math topics.  This link above provides the tutorial on solving linear equations.  The tutorial includes four steps to follow while solving a linear equation, six examples that you will be walked through with detailed directions and explanations, and finally four extra practice problems where you solve a linear equation and then can click on another link to see the answer and explanation as to how to get that answer.

This site provides four examples of solving linear equations.  It shows step-by-step what actions need to be taken.  It is run as a learner-centric public service, not a plug in your question and I’ll give you an answer, which is a good thing.  The information has been reviewed by a math professor for errors as well.

This site brings up a page of several linear equations, which you should try to solve by yourself.  Then you can click on Solution and see every step worked out and the solution.  This is a great site to use to find a similar problem that might be on the homework assignment, to see how it should be worked out.  Plus there are links at the bottom of the page for any math genre.  So if you have trouble in algebra (any topic) you could click on algebra and find help in your area of need.

This algebra tutorial contains different examples of solving linear equations based on different levels of algebra.  For example, there are basic linear examples, examples with fractions, with the distributive property, and both. This is a great site to look through when reviewing for a quiz or test.

By using this site, you could walk through all types of linear equations.  You could see the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division properties.  The cool thing about this site it the work is covered by boxes, but when you run your cursor over the boxes they disappear.  This is great for students who want to work out the problem step by step and see exactly where they are going wrong.

Story Problems

At this site, you could read and learn about translating word/story problems into linear equations.  This is a standard that students often have great difficulty with, and is tested heavily on the MEAP, ACT, and Michigan Merit Exam.  At the top of the page, there is also an index covering linear equations in a word problem, solving linear equations, and graphing linear equations.  

Systems Of Linear Equations

At this site, you can learn about solving systems of linear equations, that is two linear equations with the same two variables.  This site only looks at the linear combination method, but does provide several problems for you to work out and solve.  It also has a Math link at the top of the page. You or you parent could use this site to help in any area of mathematics and get examples or problems to work out. 

Quiz

This site provides a set of questions, whether numerical problems or graphs, and you are asked to solve for x and y.  Then you can submit your answers online.  When you submits your answers, the quiz generates the accepted answers and what you actually put as a solution.
