A Note for Parents
Dear Parents,
I am looking forward to having your children in my class this
year and to working with each of you! This year, your student will participate
in an Individualized Reading Program (IRP) that is part of our classroom curriculum.
Not only will we study literature as a class, but also each of your children
will have an IRP tailored to meet his or her needs, providing your students
a chance to have readings that really matter to their lives. This program
also shows students that reading is a valuable skill to have in our growing
society. We all need reading to do business, understand new ideas, and also
to relax. Through encouraging students to select their own readings, I hope
to help your student find the type or types of books that (s)he most enjoys
reading. By the end of this program, I hope that your students will select
readings that they would enjoy, even if not for a specific class assignment.
There will be requirements of students in this plan that will keep each student
working toward a positive, constantly growing goal. The unit will help each
student set goals for their reading and learning, and to then consistently
achieve these goals, helping them to learn this priceless life skill of working
hard toward an important objective
Students will fill out DAILY goal record sheets that list their goals and
their current progress in achieving them. Students also need to recommend
books to other students, listing the books’ recommending qualities ion
cards and posting them for other students to see. Students will schedule their
own conferences with me at the midterm point, and at a final evaluation point.
They will fill out a conference form to evaluate their progress to date and
give us an idea of how to improve their achievement.
Students may need help obtaining books from a library, or even borrowing books
from you or friends. If you are able, you might consider helping your student
browse at a bookstore for interesting reading choices. With your help, this
program can be a chance for your students to develop a lifelong love of reading
and to gain expertise with valuable life skills. Please encourage your students
to make the most of this opportunity.
Most Sincerely,
Miss Osborne
