Suppossed Sphere- An Impression of a World
I am a current fine art photography student who was born and raised in the Southwestern area of Michigan. From an early age I had a particular interest in nature and its surrounding beauty and recently I have found myself interested in the surrealist movement. To merge these ideas I have taken into my own hands the creation of small scale worlds that I fabricate and then photograph. Supposed Sphere‑ An Impression of a World is my first series of work to communicate these ideas and feelings with my audience.
To create my art works I pull together skills from sculpture, metal smith, painting, wood working and photography to make my images. First building small scale surrealistic sets in different mediums then photographing them in black and white film. I use both 35mm film and medium format films to photograph my sets. My work ranges from two dimensional photographs to my most recent works as shadow boxed sculptural images.
Extracts from Illusion
Dreaming is one our most intimate and powerful experiences we as human beings have with ourselves. Each dream we have is a different experience. We can feel emotions, live our deepest desires, overcome our fears and even be given inspiration through our dreams. Dream symbols can help us understand things about ourselves through the unconscious and even figure out some of our problems.
In Extracts from Illusion, I began an exploration of collages and surrealism done photographically in the form of scanograms. Giving the viewer a glimpse into the subconscious of the dreamer’s world, through a series of defined symbols commonly seen in dreams, I used objects in odd juxtapositions to convey the major symbolic definitions. Dreams have been a very vivid part of my life, they have helped me grow, and have inspired past artworks I have created. I felt it necessary to expand onto imagery of dreams I have had in the past, which I wanted to communicate with others through their symbolic meanings.
The work then moved in the direction of what others had dreamed of and how I, as an outsider, would visualize the dream and put it into symbols. I began this work by interviewing family and friends about their recent dream images that they could remember in their waking lives. Placing objects together in a more simplified manor I continued the college style. My imagery was said to have had a very mysterious cast that when used would create a dream like mood along with dark colored drapery that added helpful depth to the images. |
