12 Feb 09: Today is the 200th birthday of Charles Darwin, a remarkable individual who changed our understanding of the natural world, as much as the mathematicians who developed calculus did.

We can observe this event by reflecting on his life, both as a scientist and as a human being. Here is a short article that you might find interesting. Did you know, for instance, that he came from a family of abolitionists, and wrote quite strongly about how much the practise revolted him? I did not!

One of the purposes of a university education in math and science is to develop your intellectual curiosity and deepen your understanding and appreciation of natural phenomena. It's not just about exams and grades (though they are important as a means to an end).
