The Great Lakes Conference 2003 “Counseling Psychology Building
Bridges – Making a World of Difference” was hosted on April
4 and 5 by the Counseling Psychology Doctoral Program at Western Michigan
University. One hundred eighty six counseling psychology professionals,
faculty and students attended the conference. Dozens of poster presentations,
research discussions, symposia, paper sessions and roundtable talks
focused on issues including ability/disability, age, gender, ethnicity,
race, religion, sexual orientation and socioeconomic status. Featured
addresses by Dr. Louis Douce on “Globalization of Counseling Psychology
and by Dr. Derald Wing Sue on “Overcoming Your Racism: The Journey
to Liberation” and “Cultural Competence” were among
the conference highlights. Participants included counseling psychology
professionals from the community, university counseling centers and
faculty and doctoral students from 23 universities, including:
