Featured Speakers

The conference will feature two of the country’s prominent counseling psychologists as guest speakers: Dr. Louise A. Douce and Dr. Derald Wing Sue.

 

Dr. Louise A. Douce

Dr. Louise A. Douce is the Director of the Counseling and Consultation Service at the Ohio State University. She holds an Adjunct academic appointment in Counseling Psychology and maintains a small private practice in the community. She is the current President of the Society of Counseling Psychology (Division 17 of the American Psychological Association) and her Presidential initiative is the Globalization of Counseling Psychology. She has served the profession in the area of education and training of professional psychologists; the definition, vision, and promotion of Counseling Psychology; and expanding our understanding and teaching of multiculturalism across the full range of human diversity. She has published and presented training programs on lesbian, gay, and bisexual issues; HIV/AIDS issues; and supervision and training topics. She is Past-President of the Association of Counseling Center Training Agencies (ACCTA). She received the Division 17 John D. Black Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Practice of Counseling Psychology in 2001 and the Woman of the Year Award from the Division 17 Section for the Advancement of Women in 2002.

Dr. Derald Wing Sue

Dr. Derald Wing Sue is Professor of Psychology and Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. He was co-founder and first President of the Asian Psychological Association and has served as the President of the Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues (Division 45 of the American Psychological Association). He is the current President-Elect of the Society of Counseling Psychology (Division 17 of the American Psychological Association). His work in the development of multicultural counseling competencies has had a major influence on counseling and mental health professions. He is the author of numerous journal articles. His paper on the Multiple Dimensions of Cultural Competence model (MDCC) won the 2002 Division 17 award for Outstanding Contribution to The Counseling Psychologist. He has co-authored three widely used texts in the field: Counseling American Minorities: A Cross Cultural Perspective (1998) (5th ed.), Multicultural Counseling Competencies: Individual and Organizational Development (1998) and Counseling the Culturally Diverse: Theory and Practice (2003) (4th ed.). Counseling the Culturally Diverse is considered a classic in the field of multicultural counseling and therapy. This work builds on the MDCC model and offers a contemporary definition of multicultural counseling that expands the field. Dr. Sue’s recent work, Overcoming Your Racism: The Journey to Liberation, is a new book on the deconstruction of Whiteness. Dr. Sue is one of the most cited multicultural scholars in the United States.
