These are images of women college basketball players, of moments when they are generally not seen—away from the game, with empty stands, and no one watching. As a member of the highest level of a college basketball team for four years, I was exposed to the friendships, camaraderie, and emotions of women all striving towards one goal—success as a team. Capturing unseen, off the court moments with high-speed black and white film give the images a grainy, newspaper-like feel, one that freezes these moments in time. Now, my time as player is over. My new goal is to continue photographing these women as an outside, an observer, but now capturing those “in-between” moments during games, practices, and workouts that I was never able to document because I was always a part of them. The more that I am able to photograph this group, the more I am able to learn what it takes to capture what it is inside that drives these women to dedicate themselves to such a demanding and life-consuming activity, and in turn, what it was in myself.
