College Courses

I have picked five college courses that I believe have helped make me a better person and that were very instrumental in obtaining my accounting major. The following five classes I consider to be the backbone of my education and the ones that were the most interesting.

1.         BUS 2700 Information and Communication Technology

In this class I learned a lot about the new information technology that is available to companies and businesses throughout the world. This class focuses on information-communication literacy, system literacy, and business information technologies. This class emphasizes the relationship between information technology and business processes and the importance of aligning business information systems with business strategy. By learning and using the information systems available to businesses, this class provided me with a glimpse of what I will have to do in the real world.

2.         Communication 113 Interpersonal Communication

This class is exactly what it sounds like, communicating between people. Although we communicate with each other everyday, we do not always do it in the best ways. This class talked a lot about how to communicate well with others and how to improve listening skills. I learned a lot of new tactics to communicate and make sure I was fully understanding what the other person was communicating to me. The one thing that I think makes this course so important to my education is that it will provide me with the proper information to communicate with my co-workers in the work place and it helps me better relate to other people too.

3.         Business 103 Business Computer Applications

In business computer applications I learned three programs: word, excel, and access. This course alone is one of the most important because it helped me to understand and be able to use these programs. As each day passes more and more is done on computers and less and less in done by paper and pencil, making it all that more important that I understand and be able to use the various computer programs available to me. Many businesses use any of the three programs and as an accounting major it is important that I am familiar with these programs, as most jobs require some knowledge of the three.

4.         Accounting 3100 Financial Accounting I

As my first upper level accounting class, accounting 3100 taught me a lot. I learned much needed information about balance sheets and income statements. I learned what to do when you have been donated assets, and how to properly record them. I learned that nearly 75% of all companies use a multi-step income statement. This class is the foundation to my accounting degree. It has given me the basics along with a few advanced concepts to continue on in accounting and pursue my degree. This class has also prepared me well for the real world as I now have a good idea of what I will be doing as an accountant.

5.         WPE 101 Principles of Fitness and Health

This class was an introduction to life long health and fitness. I learned what I need to do in order to keep my body in top physical condition in order to maintain a healthy and active life. In class we learned how to properly stretch and lift weights, along with how to eat properly and read the nutrition labels on food. Even though this class does not have anything to do with my major of accounting it does look good to employers that I know how to take care of myself. Employers and employees are facing higher and higher health care costs each and every year, so employers are now not only looking at the fact that you have the skills and knowledge to do the job, but the fact that you won’t cost them and arm and a leg to insure.
