How far should scientist go in pursueing an understanding of the world around us? I feel that it is good that we hav an understanding of things that we can potentially harness for the imporvement of mankind as a whole. For example things like the wheel, gunpowder, the horseless carriage, and ice cream are all great and had to be invented through knowledge gained by studying nature. However, is it really important that we are able to capture quarks, or have the means to develop hundreds of lethal chemicals whose only purpose is to kill things. What does this gain humanity? These examples may not be the best, but will there ever be a time where we as a species say that we know enough and recognize that there are some things that it is acceptable to not know and attribute to a higher power or phenomenon. If that is not that case I fear that we will continue to push into areas that we do not know about just for the sake of pushing the boundries, and continually blunder our way through causing major damage that we don't realize at the time. Such as our brilliant coolants such as chloroform, accidents like Chernobyl, and catastrophes like Hiroshima and the atomic bomb. |
