Participation ES 3950
Your participation grade in this class is not a gimme 100 pts. I realize that participation can take a variety of forms including some of those listed below. I use a variety of criteria to assess every student individually. To earn a 90 or above score, in the course of the semester you must do more than one, indeed many of these actions, even some you have not done before and do not feel comfortable doing.
Attendance with the necessary items you need to bring to each class session, |
Talking and listening, |
Quality of reading records, |
Quality of listening during group sessions, |
Asking questions that pull out important assumptions of each other’s arguments, |
Asking questions that lead to important understandings of each other’s arguments, |
Openly inspecting the validity of one’s own sources, |
Openly inspecting the validity of other’s sources, |
Playing devil’s advocate to pull out colleagues’ best thinking, |
Willingness to allow colleagues to play devil’s advocate for you, |
Willingness to open up one’s writing for the group to inspect and help, |
Presenting the details of one’s thought for the group to see & comment upon, |
Moving the group forward or back on track when needed, |
Initiate and participate in group discussions on the principles of the LRS, |
Regularly consider (carefully and deliberately) a wide range of possible answers, including those initially seen as implausible, and |
Carefully and deliberately show the process of final selection of answers on the strength of evidence and argument. |
