In Jerry's ES 3950 PBL class,

You must take charge of your own learning.

May 25:

We trust you are having a pleasant and rewarding Memorial Day weekend.

One reminder we did not have time to announce in class is that we are counting on each one of you to report back on the research you had agreed to! A couple of you appeared to be ready to do so on Thursday but it seemed to us that several others were not. We will make time this Tuesday for each of you to report back to the group on your research. Everyone is counting on you finding something important they can use in the upcoming paper!

May 22:

A second court case for the important concepts list: Parents Involved in Community Schools Inc. v. Seattle School District is the more recent court case I mentioned in class which guts all the stuffing out of Brown vs Board of Education. It more than gives schools permission to ignore race but almost requires them to do so..

May 16:

Please remember that the Coleman reading, which is posted on our e-learning site (in "Content"), is required reading (pages 330-345 are required, but I recommend doing the entire reading). As a further attachment to your paper for Problem #2, you will write a short (one-paragraph) summary of the Coleman reading. I recommend that you not only summarize the reading, but that you focus your summary around an attempt to answer the "Why?" question I posed to you in class today (Why do American students spend more time socializing and less time studying?). Coleman offers one potential answer to this question. Do you agree with his answer?

May 15:

Now that you know Dr. Pillsbury's pet peeve, you get the chance to prove him ironical! Find a missing apostrophe or a misplaced one anywhere on this website and earn 5 points extra credit!

May 11:

When you send in your paper, please send it to both Ms. Schroeder at rachel.l.schroeder@wmich.edu and Dr. Pillsbury at Pillsbury@wmich.edu.

May 9:

Your second assignment (Due Tuesday, May 15, except the paper which is due Saturday by 5 PM.):

1.

Write the paper with the 3 attachments, of course.
2. Read Problem #2
3. Do Exercises #9-#13

May 8:

Here is the first night's assignment:

1. Read, or reread, the LRS lessons #1 & #2,
2. Do exercises #1-#5 on LRS pages 25 - 28,
3. Read Woods and Fogerty articles in coursepack,
4. Write reading records (r.r.). on them,
5. Find 2-3 scholarly sources and fill out 2-3 r.r. on them,
6.

Post all r.r. on NiceNet.org. Key is found at the bottom of these comments,

7. Read all of the r.r. posted.

May 4:

Welcome to Pillsbury's and Schroeder's ES 3950 class! Starting a new
class is always exciting. We are looking forward to meeting all of
   you on May 8.

We want to give you your first assignment which we would like you to do before the first class. This first activity is one that we hope you find at least somewhat pleasant and that is to explore Pillsbury's website and all of its links. The website is located at: http://homepages.wmich.edu/~pillsbur/. (Which if you are reading this message on the Announcements page, you have obviously already found!) At the bottom of the main page you will find a link to Problem #1 which is where we will start. Our method of teaching is probably far different from what you have had in the past. We do not lecture, nor will we routinely assign a common set of readings for us to discuss. Instead what we present you are real world messy problems that demand thoughtful, humane responses. We call this learning Problem-based Learning or PBL <http://homepages.wmich.edu/%7Epillsbur/ES%203950/Syllabus/es3950instructionalmethod.html> for short. we call these problems real-world because they are the kinds of problems thoughtful, caring teachers face everyday as teachers in public schools. We call these problems messy because I don't give you all of the materials and information you need to craft thoughtful, humane responses. You will need to use your own resources to find this information and these judgments, resources which include, of course, the Internet, the library, and experts in the field. * Read carefully because we give you three points extra credit for every mistake, even itsy-bitsy tiny ones, you find on my website (even in this note!) or in the coursepack (as long as you are the first one to find it!). Please report any broken or outdated links. Please read the instructional method page <http://homepages.wmich.edu/%7Epillsbur/ES%203950/Syllabus/es3950instructionalmethod.html>, the course syllabus page <http://homepages.wmich.edu/%7Epillsbur/ES%203950/Syllabus/es3950syllabus.html>, and Problem #1 page <http://homepages.wmich.edu/%7Epillsbur/ES%203950/Problems/prob1pbl/es3950problem1usingPBL.html>*

*You have only two (maybe three) books to buy this semester: /Ecological Literacy/ and the coursepack. Please pick these up right away because we will be using them both during the first few days of class.
