He was born Robert Anthony Thorns, from Doris Thorns on May 8, 1970. Raised by both mother and grandmother, Robert attended Mount Vernon and Countee Cullen grammar schools. In 1984, high school began at Mendel Catholic College Prepratory (an all boys private school), where Robert showed good aptitude as a student and athlete. A good all around athlete, Robert participated in football, wrestling, track and cross-country. Dedicating himself only to track and cross-country by his junior year, he completed high school as an honor student and an all-state athlete in track and field by running under 4:20 in the mile. Achieving a scholarship in track, Robert attended Western Illinois University in 1988, where he pledged the fraternity Phi Beta Sigma, had a fun-filled social life, and achieved a bachelors degreee in history. After graduation, Robert first put his degree to work by getting a job as a shift manager at Taco Bell, then teaching and coaching track and cross-country at his high school alma mata (which had closed in 1988 after he graduated and reopened as a coed school called St. Martin De Porres), which would soon close and Robert got a job at Leo high school as a History, American Government, Theology, and physical education teacher and head cross-country/asst. track coach. After 6 years, a number of all-state/all conference athletes, numerous state and conference track championships, lack of certification forced Robert to receive the shoe from Leo. After moving to Kalamazoo, fruitless unemployment searches led Robert back to school to attain a master's degree in sports management with a possible career choice as an athletic director in order to run his own track program (which he misses very much). Now almost half-way through his master's program Robert has met a number of very nice individuals, (Jean, Zach, J, Jeffs) as well as great professors (Dr. Liu, Dr. Lewis, Dr. Mcfarland, Dr. Weideman, etc) that have helped my adjustment to Kalamazoo and made my new college experience very comfortable.
Thanks guys.
| As former resident of Chicago, I still have a great love for all of our sports teams. It's also very nice to have watched our teams win championships in the "big 3" major sports which they did in dominating fashion. From the Superbowl shuffle, to 6 nba championships in 8 years, to the White Sox who finally put the 1919 "Black Sox" curse to rest. Now Shoeless Joe can rest in peace and look down and smile. |
