The History of The Potters House:

In 1974 a small group of college students from Calvin College moved to the Roosevelt Park community in Grand Rapids, Michigan and started to reach out to the local youth. After six years of doing this, they decided to open up a school located in the basement of Roosevelt Park Community Church. In 1981, two volunteer teachers began a school with 12 students from various ethnic backgrounds as well as income levels. What started as a school for elementary level students has now grown to a school for all grade levels K-12. The Potters House now occupies two seperate buildings, a K-8 building as well as a High School building. What started out as 12 students from various family backgrounds has now grown into a school with over 500 students.

A little more Information.....

Something unique about The Potters House is that it continues to grow. While most private schools have seen their enrollment decrease, The Potters House has increased. What makes The Potters House unique is that tuition for the school is based on a families income. Also, most private schools' funds come from around 80 percent tuition and 20 percent funding. The Potters House receives 80 percent of its funding from donors and 20 percent from tuition. This mission is to open its door's to anyone within the community who would like to enter the school regardless of family incomes and ethnic backgrounds. I have now worked at The Potters House for three years and have enjoyed my time there.
