Description

Apple aims for nothing short of a revolution, whether in personal computing or digital media distribution. The company's desktop and laptop computers -- all of which feature its OS X operating system -- include its Mac mini, iMac, and MacBook for the consumer and education markets, and more powerful Mac Pro and MacBook Pro for high-end consumers and professionals involved in design and publishing. Apple scored a runaway hit with its digital music players (iPod) and online music store (iTunes). Other products include mobile phones (iPhone), servers (Xserve), wireless networking equipment (Airport), and publishing and multimedia software. Its FileMaker subsidiary provides database software.

Circuit City

Description

A short circuit in this city might leave a lot of electronic gadgets on the shelves. Circuit City Stores is a top US consumer electronics retailer (along with Best Buy and Wal Mart), with 700-plus superstores in about 45 states. The big-box outlets offer a variety of TVs, DVD players, and audio systems, as well as CDs and DVDs. Circuit City also sells personal computers and peripherals, mobile computing devices, telephones, and video games. In addition to its retail stores, the firm sells products online. Circuit City's international operations are conducted by Canadian subsidiary InterTAN, which operates about 770 locations there. Circuit City Stores filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November 2008.
