While firearms would be the most ideal weapons, realistically you're not going to have unlimited access to guns, and ammunition is far from unlimited. So in tight spots and in between gun stores, you're going to want alternative weaponry. This list contains some of the best weapons to have around you at all times.

-Bow and Arrow
A bow and arrow is always useful to have on you, in case you run out of bullets, which are a limited commodity. However, you’re going to need to be pretty good at shooting to kill a zombie, so practice will be needed. A crossbow will be more desirable than a longbow, so look for those for maximum accuracy at a close range.

-Sharp Blade of some kind
Another useful tool you’ll need is some sort of sharp blade. In fact, the more you have the better. Small knives will come in handy for sharpening points (to make arrows) and general usefulness for survival in the wilderness. Longer blades (Katanas, Samurai blades, machetes) will help in defense against zombies, as well as general survival. If possible you should try to find somebody who is proficient with knives and blades to travel with you in your party, and if you don’t try to practice your accuracy when you find a safe place.

-Clubs, or long, blunt instruments
Other useful weapons include clubs, such as baseball bats, or actual clubs, like golf clubs. These are useful, but should be used as a last result as they require you to come into close contact with the zombies, increasing your chances of being bitten. Remember that your survival is important to every member of your party.

-Alcohol
Not just for consumption, alcohol is extremely flammable, and fire is a very useful tool against zombies. It can be used as a distraction to plan an ambush, as zombies will be driven to the fire since it hints at some intelligent life form (i.e brains) around or close by. Also since zombies lack any form of sense, "stop drop and roll" is long gone from their vocabulary (replaced by moaning sounds, hissing, and occasionally "brains"), so fire will consume them until they are burned to a crisp.
-Keep glass bottles around for making homemade Molotov cocktails, but be careful, exploding glass hurts more than just zombies. The explosion is also sure attract attention: of other zombies, or of other survivors who can be just as dangerous.
