Bassoon Study at WMU
The Bassoon Studio at Western Michigan University is comprised of 8 - 10 talented, highly motivated bassoon undergraduate students and 1-2 graduate students, including a graduate assistant. These students come from Michigan and beyond to improve their skills, acquire performance experience in a variety of settings, and to be trained to become music educators, performers, music therapists, etc.
Each student in the bassoon studio studies with Dr. Rose, and receives one lesson each week. In addition to that experience, several studio/reed classes take place each semester, as well as special bi-weekly studio/reed classes for freshmen/sophomores. Every student in the bassoon studio is expected to perform on several of these classes, as well as the Bassoon Studio Recital, which takes place toward the end of the semester.
Each semester, a guest artist is invited to present a master class for the bassoon students. Past guest artists include Christopher Weait, Kristin Wolfe-Jensen, Michael Harley, Hugh Cooper, Robert Barrus, Jeff Lyman, John Miller, William Ludwig etc. In addition, the bassoon studio, along with the oboe studio presents a Double Reed Festival at WMU. Plans are in the works for Double Reed Festival 2009, which typically takes place in early January.
The School of Music at WMU is home to several large ensembles in which the students play and perform. The University Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Band, and Concert Band are ensembles for which the students audition each semester. Placement in these ensembles is open to any WMU student, and is based on auditions which take place the first day of each semester.
Students also perform in chamber music groups. The bassoon studio performs ensemble music together, and there are also opportunities to play in woodwind quintets, trios, double reed ensembles etc.
When students graduate from WMU, they are well prepared for graduate study, teaching positions, music therapy positions, etc. The course of study is comprehensive, and students are given a wide range of performing opportunities.
