The College of Science and Letters of the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) is seeking two tenure track faculty members in Science Education, positions to begin Fall, 2007. Preferred rank is Assistant Professor, but other applicants will be considered. The faculty positions will be in IITıs innovative Department of Mathematics and Science Education, which strongly emphasizes a research-based approach to discipline-specific teacher education. IIT is a scientific/technical institution that focuses on science, mathematics, engineering, and computer science with a strong commitment to the value of disciplined-based mathematics/science education. The institution, located three miles from downtown Chicago, is in the midst of a significant growth phase, which includes new dormitories and a state of the art student center. The Department provides preservice programs in secondary (grades 6-12) mathematics and science teaching, MS degrees for inservice teachers, and PhD degrees for mathematics/science educators. Although only in its sixth year of existence, the Department currently consists of six full-time faculty, 42 PhD students, 75 MS students, and 20 preservice students. The successful candidate will have an earned doctorate in science education, demonstrated potential in scholarship/research, ability and willingness to assume a leadership role in science education at the international level, successful teaching experience at the secondary level, and the potential to develop strong collaborative ties with informal science education institutions. Above all, the successful candidate will have the potential to provide creative and innovative approaches to science education.
Responsibilities will include teaching in undergraduate and graduate secondary math and science preservice and inservice education programs, supervising of field placement students, providing professional development to inservice teachers, advising and teaching of doctoral students, publishing of scholarly research, and working closely with faculty members in engineering, mathematics and science. The position requires a strong background in science subject matter as well as science education. Expertise in educational technology, and the ability to obtain external funds are strongly preferred. Salary is competitive and commensurate with professional and scholarly record, with initial appointments typically including generous start-up packages.
