At IUP, all science education programs are undergraduate programs housed in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and administered cooperatively with the College of Education and Education Technology. To meet the requirements for Biology certification, majors must satisfy the requirements for the degree in Biology, as well as those for certification as a secondary educator. There are approximately 40 undergraduate students enrolled in the program.
The Department of Biology at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) enrolls approximately 250 majors in four degree programs (B.A. and B.S. in Biology, B.S. in Biology Education and B.S. in Environmental Health). There are specialized tracks for students seeking the B.S. in Biology (Cell and Molecular Biology, Pre-Medical and Pre-Veterinary) and an Honors Program open to all students except those in Environmental Health. The Biology Department also co-sponsors – with the Department of Chemistry – an interdisciplinary B.S. in Biochemistry (http://www.iup.edu/biochemistry/). In addition, approximately 200 pre-professional students majoring in college sponsored Natural Science programs (http//www.iup.edu/preprofessional/) enroll in many Biology courses at IUP. The Biology Department offers an M.S. program and about 25 students are currently enrolled, including education specialists seeking an advanced degree in Biology.
We wish to hire faculty who will commit to the growth and development of the department and its programs as well as the growth and development of our students. In addition to classroom teaching, our faculty provide students with opportunities for active learning through hands-on science in the form of involvement in research projects and internship opportunities. The ³Teacher-Scholar² Model of Ernest Boyer, based on a broad and comprehensive definition of scholarship, defines directions for faculty professional growth at IUP. In local language, the Teacher-Scholar is a person who understands subject matter deeply enough to structure, select, and organize it in order to effectively communicate to students. A Teacher-Scholar also is a person whose scholarship and service to the university and community demonstrate a commitment to creating new knowledge, to applying knowledge to solving problems, to synthesizing various strands of knowledge, and to understanding how students learn. A more complete description of this model can be found at the IUP Teaching Excellence Center website at (http://www.iup.edu/teachingexcellence/carntch/tch-sch.shtm). Within the context of the Teacher-Scholar Model, candidates for the Biology Education position will be expected to develop a productive science education research program that actively involves undergraduate and/or graduate students.
Candidates will contribute to shared university governance through participation in departmental, college, and/or university committees, programs and work groups as appropriate. Candidates will also provide high quality academic student advisement.
