The University of Maryland, Baltimore
County (UMBC) invites applications for a tenure-track assistant or associate
professor position to begin Spring Fall 2007 pending opening. We seek a person with the doctoral
degree whoThe successful candidate will
participate in ongoing development, delivery, and assessment of the UMBC secondary
science teacher education programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Specifically, the person in this position entailswill teaching courses in secondary
science education and other areascourses
as best fits the
candidatešsir expertise;, supervising field experiences and student teaching;
conducting
research in science education;,
connecting with P-12 schools
to establish P-16
partnerships insupport the science teacher education programs;, recruiting and advising teacher
education students; participating
in curriculum development and revision; and collaboratinge with other UMBC
science departments to continuously improve the programs and assure compliance with NSTA standards.
Science teaching experience in U.S. secondary schools (7-12) is required and
familiarity with culturally sensitive pedagogy and/or urban schools is
desirable.
UMBC is a dynamic, Carnegie Carnegie I (high
activity), Rresearch Uuniversity (high research activity) located in the Baltimore/Washington corridor.
The UMBC Department of Education offers initial and advanced NCATE- approved teacher
education programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The department endeavors to further enhance the diversity of its

Overview of
Duties & Responsibilities:
ˇprovides classroom instruction as needed
based on areas of expertise
ˇinitiates and sustains research in science
education
ˇparticipates in curriculum
development and revision
ˇassesses the curriculum against state and
national standards
ˇsupervises field experiences and
student teaching
ˇserves as a resource for faculty members and other
program areas
ˇserves on department, campus and
university system committees
ˇrecruits and advises teacher education students
ˇbuilds partnerships and collaborates
with local schools
ˇparticipates in grant writing and acquisition of
external funding for the Department of
Education
ˇperforms other duties as assigned
