During my years of teaching, I have continually strived to develop a broad array of teaching skills and adjust them to meet the needs of my students. I am aware of the influence of cultural differences on learning styles and that not all students use the same learning processes. Students learn in many ways – by seeing and hearing; reflecting and acting; reasoning logically and intuitively; memorizing and visualizing and drawing analogies and building models. Teaching methods also vary from instructor to instructor. While I feel it is important to challenge my students, I also work with each and every student to match my teaching style with their learning style. Mastery of course materials is an importance to student's education, but I go beyond mastery and help students develop important skills such as critical thinking and problem solving strategies along with preparing them to be able to function effectively in society.
I am a believer in learning by doing -- the "hands-on" experience. There is a need to be able to do something in order to process it. While developing coursework with lots of hands-on experiences, I keep in mind that students also need to have a connection with everything they do in order to find relevance in what they are learning. Each student comes to the classroom at their own level, with their own culture, and their own experiences. These differences change from student to student and from semester to semester. Therefore, each semester I adjust my curriculum to fit my class. With these thoughts in mind, I see the process model, which focuses on diversity along with different ways for individuals to construct knowledge from experiences, as my foremost teaching style.
I also believe that technology has become an important part of society and therefore an important part of education. Educators need to keep up with the pace of rapidly changing technology. Therefore, technology skills should be a major part of their professional development as educators and lifelong learners. Please click here to view my Curriculum Vitae.
