My Future Goals
Home

As a current undergraduate student in the psychology program at Western Michigan University, I already have the benefit of knowing the faculty, students, and framework of the psychology department.  This makes me all the more confident that my pursuit of attending graduate school here at WMU is the right choice.  When I began my academic career at WMU, I had an interest in psychology.  I knew that I wanted to do something within the field, and as I get ready to graduate in April, I leave with a new appreciation for behavior analysis and a love of industrial/organizational psychology in particular.  The educational experiences that I have had at WMU have literally changed my way of thinking about my life and of the world around me.  The psychology department has encouraged me to continue my education and continue learning about behavior analysis, which is something that I have seen work, and that I truly believe in.

My professional goals consist of continuing my education, by getting a Master’s degree and then pursuing a Ph. D. right away.  Upon completing a Ph. D, I would like to work as a consultant; I have not narrowed down an area of specific interest yet.  I have been exposed to many different aspects of I/O psychology in my classes, everything from safety, to training, and I already have a background in industrial/organizational psychology by taking the instructional design practicum with Dr. Fox, Dr. Austin’s PSY 444 class, and also by doing research in the area with Dr. Dickinson.

As you read this, please consider that as an applicant, I will not have the highest GRE scores, or the highest GPA, but I bring with myself experiences that are more valuable than a number.  I have a lot to offer this school, and this program.  As an undergraduate, I have maintained a full time job along with a full course load throughout my academic career.  I am an assistant manager at the restaurant that I work at, so I have experience dealing with and supervising people in different relationships outside of academia.  These relationships are very important to me; I am very friendly and always get along with other people, which I feel is one of my most valuable skills both in school and in my future career in the business world.

I am highly dedicated to my work, a trait that can be hard to find.  When I have a goal set for myself, I always achieve it.  This dedication is why I will be successful in this graduate program.  If I am accepted into this program, I will bring fresh ideas into the department, work diligently, and be an inspiration for other undergraduate students who are thinking of attending graduate school.  I will become even more passionate about behavior analysis and I/O psychology, and become a wonderful consultant who is completely dedicated to my field.  I have faith in myself, and I assure you that I will continue to be an excellent student and a valuable asset to this program.
