West Virginia, also called the mountain state, became a state on June 20, 1863 after it broke away from Virgina during the Civil War. It is called the Mountain State because it is the only state that is completely located in the Appalachian Mountain range.The capital and largest city in West Virginia is Charleston. West Virginia is known for its coal mining and timbre heritage, and it is the home of a number of tourist attractions including Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, New River Gorge Bridge, and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. As of the year 2000, the population in West Virginia was 1,808,344. The economy of this state is low with it being the third lowest in per capita income. In addition, this state is last in median household income, and only about 15% of the adult population have earned a bachelor's degree, which ranks it the lowest in the United States. West Virginia's economy depends greatly on coal and somewhat on drilling oil.
