Concept:
1. Explain
what locomotor movements and Non-locomotor movements are.
Locomotor movements
are movements that travel through space
Non-locomotor
movements are movements that move around the spine rather then movement which
takes the body through space.
2. Ask
for examples and demonstrate examples.
EXPLORING THE
CONCEPT
Exploring the
Concept:
Locomotor land/Non-locomotor land
1. Divide
the room in half with colored tape
2. Half
is locomotor movement land and the other is non-locomotor movement land
3. Explain
when you are in the locomotor movement land you must dance locomotor movements
and when you are in the non-locomotor movement land you must dance locomotor
movements. You can change from one land to the other when the music changes.
Also, you can dance on the border and do both locomotor and non-locomotor
movements.
4. Play
#20 on CD: “Music for Creative Dance” Contrast and Continuum Vol.
III by. Eric Chappelle
Shaping:
Body Halves
1. Put
on any type of music
2. Explain freeze the lower half of your body in
a shape.
3. When
the music starts, dance with the upper half of your body in self space using
locomotor movements.
4. When
the music stops, freeze the upper half in a shape and dance with the lower half
through general space using locomotor movements.
5. Alternate
upper and lower halves dancing with locomotor and non-locomotor movements.
Instruments:
1. Using
a drum for a steady beat
2. Call
out a locomotor or non-locomotor movement and dance to explore that movement.
3. Repeat
several times.
DEVELOPING SKILLS
Developing Skills:
1. Form a circle and play #2 on CD: “Can a Jumbo Jet Sing the Alphabet?” by Hap Palmer.
2. Stretch, shake and bounce to warm up during the opening verse. Next, create motions that go along with a word for each letter of the alphabet. For example, arch, reach up and bend backwards.
3. Repeat the song.
Turning:
1. Using
a drum for a steady beat
2. Call
out a locomotor movement then do a turn into a non-locomotor movement.
3. Do
this activity across the floor
4. Repeat
with different locomotor and non-locomotor movements.
Combining Movements:
Word Cards
1. Choose
a card from the card pile (write locomotor words on cards with one color and
non-locomotor words with a different color)
2. Find
a spot and put the card face up on the floor in front of you.
3. Read
each student’s card and perform that action in self or general space.
4. Find
a friend with a different colored card and put your two cards in front of you
on the floor
5. Combine
the two cards to create a special dance word.
Leaping:
1. Using
a drum for a steady beat
2. Call out a non-locomotor movement then do a leap into a locomotor movement
3. Do this activity across the floor
4. Repeat
with different locomotor and non-locomotor movements.
CREATING
Free Dancing/Improvising:
1. Using a drum or animal sounding music
2. Go through the alphabet and call out an animal for every letter or have the students call out an animal.
3. Move like that animal through the general space using locomotor and non-locomotor movements.
Choreographing:
1. Using any type of music
2. Form groups of 3 or 4
3. Individually dance out the letters of your name using locomotor and non-locomotor movements that start with that letter.
