CHEM 3710 Intro Organic Chemistry Lab
|
| |
|
|
| |
|
Labs begin the week of January 16. |
| |
|
|
| |
|
FIRST LAB SESSION:
No Pre-Lab is required on the first day of class, but Pre-Labs are necessary for all other lab sessions. On the first day, students need to bring 1) a valid WMU ID, 2) the lab manual, 3) the lab notebook, 4) safety goggles, and 5) wear appropriate clothes, see syllabus for details |
| |
|
|
| |
|
MOLECULAR MODELS:
Molecular models are required for Lab 2 (Exp 1). Effective, inexpensive models are available in the bookstore or online, such as the Molecular Vision Organic Model Kit (Darling Models), or the Aldrich CHEM-TUTOR Student Modeling System. |

CHECK IN and Safety Quiz (TECH 700)
Bring 1) a valid WMU ID, 2) the lab manual, 3) the lab notebook, 4) safety goggles, and 5) wear appropriate clothes. |

Lab 2 |
1) Molecular Models
Pre-Lab (= In-Lab Worksheet) Exp 1 (here)
Lab Exp 1 (In-Lab Handout)
Students can already prepare for this "dry lab" by 1) practicing the use of molecular models and by
2) reading about alkane conformations and how isomers connect. |

Lab 3 |
2) Thin Layer Chromatography (TECH 707)
Pre-Lab Exp 2 (here)
In preparation for your lab, it is recommended that you first read the experiment description
on pages 29-38. Take notes directly into your notebook. These excerpts will serve as a reference for you for future experiments and the final exam. It is good practice to look up structures, functional groups and hazards of all chemicals that are mentioned. Remember to bring a ruler.
