Engineering Summer Institutes

An Exceptional Summer Opportunty for Exceptional High School Students

What is the opportunity?

The College of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Western Michigan University is offering a Summer Workshop for high school students who are entering the 11th and 12th grades in the coming academic school year. In this workshop participants will learn to program a small USB stick development tool for use with any computer system.

At the same time, participants will learn about the exciting fields of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science/ Engineering, as well as other engineering fields and opportunities.

When will this happen?

The workshop lasts one week. You can apply for one of two choices...
  • August 4 to 8
  • or

  • August 11 to 15

Is this a good activity for me?

The successful participant will have had Algebra II. There is no reason to have had computer programming background before, although it would certainly help! Students with less than Algebra II will be considered, but preference will be given those with more mathematics

Other Engineering fields

  • Electrical Engineering
  • Computer Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Aeronautical Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Construction Engineering
  • Industrical Engineering
  • Manufacturing Engineering
  • Computer Science
  • Paper Science

What is the EZ 430 USB Development Tool?

This device fits into the USB port of either a PC desktop or laptop computer and includes the development system as well as the flash memory on which to create and store simple computer games and control systems.

The USB stick development tool looks and acts very much like an ordinary “Thumb Drive” in that it is inserted in the USB port of your computer. However, unlike a thumb drive, which is simply pure memory, the EZ 430 can be programmed into computer games and with an electrical circuit interface can perform any number of useful functions. In this workshop you will learn to program this device for several entertaining applications.
