ECE 7250: Ph.D. Seminar

Course Description

ECE 7250 is a seminar for Ph.D. candidates in Electrical and Computer Engineering. In this course we will discuss professional practice, ethics and accepted practices for conducting research. Time will be spent learning to how successful researchers present their work, both quantitatively and qualitatively. Students will also practice critiquing research papers, proposals and presentations. They will also write a series of papers, posters and presentations.

In order to optimize success, it is strongly recommended that students enlist the assistance of their research advisor early on, so that lessons learned will have a direct carry-over to their personal research agendas. In the end it is expected that each student will minimally have a working document that will serve as their formal research proposal for their dissertation.

Course Topics

To accomplish the course goals, a traditional seminar mode will be employed. This requires each participant to study, discuss, present and critique writing as well as orally. In particular, we will discuss and do the following:

  • Basic research statistics
  • Professional practice
  • Proposal reviews and formulation
  • Paper reviews and discussion
  • Poster presentation
  • Ph.D. proposal and presentation

It is expected that by the end of this course, you should have grown considerably in your understanding and experience in the process of doing and achieving your research goals. For this reason, honesty with ourselves and our peers is essential. By being helpful to each other in this seminar, we will (hopefully) better achieve success.
