Westbound LIE reopens after fatal tanker-truck crash

Maintenance crews and a crane remained at the scene of an overturned tanker truck that crashed and burst into a massive tower of gasoline-fueled flames on the Long Island Expressway on Saturday morning, killing the truck driver and later collapsing a highway sign structure.

A man charged with cutting old-growth trees on U.S. Forest Service land near Truckee was sentenced earlier this week to 27 months in prison and $70,430 in restitution.
John W. Clifton, 21, of Truckee and Sierraville, was sentenced Tuesday in Sacramento by U.S. District Judge John A Mendez.
West Olive teen hit by semi identified

A rural West Olive teenager hit by a semi was hospitalized in critical condition Friday night at Spectrum Health's Butterworth Hospital, authorities said.
Cody Morren, 16, was walking eastbound on the south side of M-45 (or Lake Michigan Drive) near the 104th Avenue intersection when he attempted to cross the highway. As he did, he was struck by the rear of a westbound semi at 4:44 p.m. Friday, said Sgt. Brian Buter, of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department.

Haitian orphans safe in new Chicago homes

As Kim Lewen walked into her Willowbrook home Friday, her two adopted Haitian daughters wrapped tightly in her arms, the magnitude of her new reality finally hit her.
After months of bureaucratic wrangling and a devastating earthquake that stranded the girls at a mountaintop orphanage, she had become a mother.
"It's really amazing," Lewen said. "We just ate dinner and now I am going to give them a bath.
