Course Schedule - Weekly Overview

This is a tentative schedule for the semester. Changes may be necessary to arrange for visits from guest speakers.

You will be notified of any changes.

The best writers are readers.

You should read the news on a daily basis.

You also need to complete the assigned textbook readings BEFORE class.

All assigned textbook chapters are found the Rich's, Writing and Reporting News: A Coaching Method.

LAB: News Values and Interviewing Basics

LAB PREP:
Write down and bring to lab at least five questions to ask of another student for a profile story about that student. You will be randomly assigned to interview another student during lab time.

 

LAB ASSIGNMENT 1 - Interviews + Profile Story

 

Lab Assignments are posted in the "Dropbox" in E-Learning. Write the profile story and upload to the Dropbox in E-learning no later than noon tomorrow (Saturday).

 

Unless otherwise specified (like today), all lab assignments are due at the end of lab. The Dropbox closes automatically, so be sure to upload your assignment a couple minutes BEFORE the deadline.

 

You MUST be present in lab in order to submit a lab assignment for a grade.

LABS:

Friday Labs are held in the Brown Hall 1045 Computer Lab

 

Lab Assignments do not appear on the E-Learning calendar until Friday mornings.

Plan on a graded Lab Assignment every Friday.

 

 

ATTENDANCE:

Students are responsible for ensuring that they are counted for attendance by picking up his/her own name card at the beginning of class and turning it in at the end of class.

Students who are late for class and are not be able to pick up his/her name card

at the beginning of class will be marked absent for that class.


DO NOT INTERUPT CLASS TO GET YOUR NAME CARD IF YOU ARE LATE!

If students pick up a name card(s) for another student(s), both the student and his/her friend(s) will receive a 0 attendance score for the semester.

Chapter quizzes will OPEN after the last scheduled lab on Friday (noon) and remain open

until 5 p.m. on the next day, Saturday.
You may use your textbook and your class notes.

You will have one minute per question.
It is your responsibility to keep track of these deadlines.

 

2. AP Style Quizzes - These will be adminisered online DURING CLASS TIME AND YOU MUST BE PRESENT IN CLASS FOR YOUR GRADE TO COUNT.
