Prepare a 2-page, double-spaced, typed critique of the story assigned to you.  Good story critiques are honest, constructive and specific.  You should write the critique as a review of the story, do not simply reply to each numbered question below.

 

  1. What are the two greatest strengths of this story?  Why? Give specific examples.
  2. What are the two greatest shortcomings of this story? Why?  How could these be addressed and improved? Give specific examples.
  3. What do you think of the lead?  Do you think it will attract readers’ attention? Why or why not? Any suggestions for improvement?
  4. What do you think of the nut graf?  Was it informative and complete?  Was any information missing?
  5. What do you think of the narrative style?  What worked?  What could use more attention? 
  6. How was the overall content of the story?  Was enough information provided? Were enough interviews conducted with the right number and right kinds of sources?  Any gaps or overlooked areas that should be included?
  7. How as the overall journalistic style of the story?  Are there any basic journalistic principles or style rules you’d like for the writer to review?
  8. What are some of the revisions you think are absolutely essential before publishing this story online?
  9. What did you find most interesting about this story?
