My name is Thomas Schaafsma and I am currently a graduate student at Western Michigan University. I am pursuing my masters degree in sports management. My goal is to work in college athletics, and eventually work my way up to a director of athletics position at a Division 1 college. If that does not happen, I would not mind working as a director of ticket operations manager, assistant athletic director, associate athletic director, or possibly a high school athletic director.

I grew up in Martin, MI, which is about 20-30 minutes north of Kalamazoo, MI. I went to school in Martin for all thirteen years. During my school years I was constantly involved in sports. I started playing football when I was eight years old, and my most memorable moment was when we qualified for the playoffs my junior year. This was the first time our school made the football playoffs in nine years. I also participated in wrestling and had the joy of going to team state my sophomore and junior years. My senior year team still holds the school record for wins, we finished the season with a record of 40-2, our second loss of the season occured in the regional finals. The last sport that I participated in was baseball. My most memorable moment in baseball was being elected to the All-Conference team my senior year. Besides sports, my other highlight was being the salutatorian of my graduating class in 2003.

After high school I enrolled at Western Michigan University in the fall of 2003. I decided to major in Physical Education with an emphasis on teaching/coaching. I also minored in history. In April 2008 I graduated cum laude with a bachelor of science degree. I am currently certified by the state of Michigan to teach physical education K-12 and history 6-12. After attending the career fair and performing a job search, I decided that I was not ready to move out of state. I instead decided to take a job offer as a graduate assistant in the WMU Athletic Ticket Office. I am just starting my second year as a graduate assistant and am responsible for the ticket operations for the women's basketball team.
