The Pattern
  1. Choose a building you want to build the gingerbread structure in the shape of.
  2. Obtain a copy of the blueprints or measurements for that particular building.
*A library or physical plant is a good place to start.
  3. Look on your blueprints for an actual scaling key. We found the blueprints already provided the scaling for us at 8’:1” . For example, Sprau Tower was 119’, which when scaled down became 15”.
  4. If the scaling key is not provided, take actual height of the building in feet (119) and divide it by how tall you want it to be in inches (15). The resulting number is how many feet equals one inch.
  5. Refer to the blueprint for an aerial view of the building. From this, you will be able to determine the number of sides and dimensions of the building. For example, Sprau Tower from the top looks like a cross. That is how we got the number of sides. We needed to make sure that we had a piece for every side, the roof and any decorative pieces.
  6. We cut out cardboard pieces based on the dimensions of the scaled down sized building. To save time, you only need to cut out one template if more than one side has the same dimensions. (FIGURE 2)
